Hit Down On Ball For More Distance

One of the toughest things for amateur golfers to do is to hit down on the golf ball (hit ball first then ground) with their irons for maximum golf ball compression, power and distance.

Common sense says you need to help the ball get in the air, thus the infamous “scooping” of the ball with your irons, meaning your wrist angle breaks way too early, and you scoop your club under the ball to try to get it in the air. The result is minimal compression when the ball is struck, robbing you of both distance and stopping action with the ball hits the green, because there is not as much spin imparted on the golf ball.

Below is a still shot of KJ Choi with Swing Vision slow motion. It’s awesome as you can clearly see how his clubface is contacting the “ball first”, then it will go into the ground. This is the action we’ve been talking about of “hitting down” or hitting the ball first, then the ground to impart maximum compression and spin with your irons.

The camera doesn’t lie. There is no denying it. But, you must NOT come down too steep and take a deep divot. The angle of attach should create a dollar-sized divot that is only about a half an inch into the ground at the very most.

With that being said, it’s time you started hitting down on the ball!

Camilo Villegas A Power Golfer

I’m sitting here watching the Buick Invitational golf tournament, and am amazed with how powerful Camilo Villegas is out of that brutal rough. They’ve had slow motion on him and his muscular strength is nearly unmatched on tour when you think of pound-for-pound.

His commitment to his game and conditioning is to be commended as he is the “new bread” of tour player that is setting the bar extremely high for future golfers hoping to make it on tour.

I’m not saying you’ve got to be like Camilo to make it on tour, but striving to be like him wouldn’t be a bad idea either! The younger breed of golfer now realizes the importance of golf training, and it’s now trickling over onto the Senior tour and older golfers. These are the golfers that can see the BIGGEST improvements.

The Secret Of Power Golf

EVERY golfer wants, dreams and strives for more power and distance. Learning the secret of power golf can get you there much, much quicker, and I’m going to tell you how right now!

Power in your golf swing comes from both your core rotation and wrist lag. Combine these two elements in your golf swing and you’ll add a TON of yards to your drives and EVERY club in your bag!

If you can’t get a full shoulder turn on your backswing, you won’t be able to generate near as much clubhead speed, but there is hope. You need to focus on targeted, simple golf exercises and stretches that will easily get you making a full backswing with no tension or extra effort.

Once you do this, all you need is wrist lag.

Retaining wrist lag late into your golf swing is the real SECRET of power in golf. The majority of amateurs release their wrist cock way too early in the downswing, losing any chance at high clubhead speeds through impact.

Just think of Sergio Garcia when you want more wrist lag. Even the great Ben Hogan, who in his time was one of the best ball strikers EVER! He really compressed the golf ball from his abbreviated wrist lag and retention late in the golf swing.

So to recap, you’ve got to make a BIG turn away from the ball, and you’ve got to retain wrist lag late into your golf swing. Give it a try!
