What Are The Key Golf Muscles

Learning what are the key golf muscles will give you a much better understanding of how to achieve more power and distance in your golf swing. There are several muscle groups that can quickly enhance your distance, if you take the right approach, that is specific to your needs.

It is SO important you quickly realize the need for improved muscle strength and flexibility if you want to enjoy your golf for years to come! As you get older, the challenge of even maintaining your current swing will be daunting to say the least.

The Back Of The Lead Shoulder

This little golf muscles is critical to your generation of power in both the backswing and downswing. This little muscle needs to be both flexible to allow for a full shoulder turn, and strong to be able to take that stretch in the backswing, and turn it into a power “pull” in the downswing.

Stand up right now and make a backswing. Feel how tight the back of your lead shoulder is? This might be the culprit to your distance issues (if you have them). This muscle is activated hugely throughout the entire golf swing. I strongly feel this muscle is the “secret golf muscle” to more distance, especially for the older golfer.

Core Muscles

You’ve no doubt heard the term core on the television, as it seems to be the big buzzword in golf right now. Too bad most golfers are using the term, but not doing anything about it.

I want you to think of your core being from your sternum to your belly button. Those muscles are a huge factor in your rotational speed, especially in your downswing. When you work your core muscles for golf, you should focus primarily on rotational movements, as that is the primary movement in the golf swing.

By stretching AND strengthening your core golf muscles you will be able to make a FULL backswing loaded with torque, ready to unleash those power muscles into that poor golf ball.

Legs

This is where it gets a little dicey! I believe the legs are your support (stability) to your golf swing. That is their primary function. Just my opinion…it’s not “in stone”. Of course the legs provide power in the downswing, but too much leg action and you’ve got either a lateral slice, or a “spinning out” of the hips, breaking up the sequence of motion for a powerful downswing.

If you can use your leg muscles to keep you in your golf posture (flexed knees) throughout your golf swing, and have them work from the “ground up”, you’ve got a powerful support structure to your golf swing.

Hit The Ball In The Upswing For Longer Drives

You must hit the ball in the upswing for longer drives loaded with power. There is no way around it. You cannot hit the ball with a downward blow with your golf driver and expect it to go your maximum distance. The launch angle and trajectory is not optimal with this type of blow to the golf ball.

Golf Driver Tip

Tee the ball forward in your stance. If you are a right-handed golfer, your ball must be even with the inside heel of your left foot. This will feel WAY UP there in your stance, but you will find it makes it much easier to hit the ball on an ascending (upward) trajectory as opposed to a downward (descending) one which is what many amateur golfers do on a regular basis.

You’re going to feel like you are “sweeping” the ball off the tee from now on. Your swing arc will bottom out just before the ball, so by the time it gets to the ball, it will be on the upswing. Make sense?

Here’s a great video for hitting your golf ball on the upswing:

Arm Tension Kills Your Golf Driver Swing Power

One of the KILLERS of clubhead speed, power and distance is arm tension. This tension in your golf swing starts with your grip and quickly works its way up through the forearms, upper arms, then the shoulders and then in the neck.

TENSION KILLS SWING SPEED!

Would you EVER swing a baseball bat or tennis racket with a “death grip” on the handle? No way! Then why do we do it in golf?

We are trying SO HARD to hit it LONG that we think that effort equates to distance, and in golf it’s the exact opposite. The harder we try, the more tension we create, which SLOWS down clubhead speed and wipes out any chance of distance.

LOOSEN YOUR GRIP!

Start with your grip. Just before you take the club away to start your backswing, give it one last waggle with your hands and wrists. Do it RIGHT BEFORE you take the club away!

This will eliminate the “death grip” and tension in your hands, giving you a great chance at a tension-free swing loaded with speed, power and resulting in maximum distance.

Hit Down On Ball For More Distance

One of the toughest things for amateur golfers to do is to hit down on the golf ball (hit ball first then ground) with their irons for maximum golf ball compression, power and distance.

Common sense says you need to help the ball get in the air, thus the infamous “scooping” of the ball with your irons, meaning your wrist angle breaks way too early, and you scoop your club under the ball to try to get it in the air. The result is minimal compression when the ball is struck, robbing you of both distance and stopping action with the ball hits the green, because there is not as much spin imparted on the golf ball.

Below is a still shot of KJ Choi with Swing Vision slow motion. It’s awesome as you can clearly see how his clubface is contacting the “ball first”, then it will go into the ground. This is the action we’ve been talking about of “hitting down” or hitting the ball first, then the ground to impart maximum compression and spin with your irons.

The camera doesn’t lie. There is no denying it. But, you must NOT come down too steep and take a deep divot. The angle of attach should create a dollar-sized divot that is only about a half an inch into the ground at the very most.

With that being said, it’s time you started hitting down on the ball!

Camilo Villegas A Power Golfer

I’m sitting here watching the Buick Invitational golf tournament, and am amazed with how powerful Camilo Villegas is out of that brutal rough. They’ve had slow motion on him and his muscular strength is nearly unmatched on tour when you think of pound-for-pound.

Camilo Villegas

His commitment to his game and conditioning is to be commended as he is the “new bread” of tour player that is setting the bar extremely high for future golfers hoping to make it on tour.

I’m not saying you’ve got to be like Camilo to make it on tour, but striving to be like him wouldn’t be a bad idea either! The younger breed of golfer now realizes the importance of golf training, and it’s now trickling over onto the Senior tour and older golfers. These are the golfers that can see the BIGGEST improvements.

The Secret Of Power Golf

EVERY golfer wants, dreams and strives for more power and distance. Learning the secret of power golf can get you there much, much quicker, and I’m going to tell you how right now!

Power in your golf swing comes from both your core rotation and wrist lag. Combine these two elements in your golf swing and you’ll add a TON of yards to your drives and EVERY club in your bag!

If you can’t get a full shoulder turn on your backswing, you won’t be able to generate near as much clubhead speed, but there is hope. You need to focus on targeted, simple golf exercises and stretches that will easily get you making a full backswing with no tension or extra effort.

Once you do this, all you need is wrist lag.

Retaining wrist lag late into your golf swing is the real SECRET of power in golf. The majority of amateurs release their wrist cock way too early in the downswing, losing any chance at high clubhead speeds through impact.

Just think of Sergio Garcia when you want more wrist lag. Even the great Ben Hogan, who in his time was one of the best ball strikers EVER! He really compressed the golf ball from his abbreviated wrist lag and retention late in the golf swing.

So to recap, you’ve got to make a BIG turn away from the ball, and you’ve got to retain wrist lag late into your golf swing. Give it a try!

Hinge Elbow For Higher Clubhead Speed

Here’s a quick tip for power in your golf swing you will be able to apply the very next time you hit the range.

Clubhead speed is one of the keys to longer drives filled with power. There are several mechanical elements in your swing that will encourage higher clubhead speeds in your golf swing. One very simple golf tip is the hinge of your lead elbow at or just after impact.

You can do it first without hitting a ball. I want you to picture your lead elbow bending quickly, and pulling back behind you through your impact. This will not inhibit your extension with your right arm (if you’re right-handed), in fact, it will allow you to extend your right arm even quicker, which also will promote a higher clubhead speed.

Take a look at the picture below. The golfer doing a drill holding onto the upper lead arm, so after impact the elbow can hinge, and not come apart from the body (chicken wing).

Once you feel you’ve got it down without hitting a ball, then do some partial backswings and hit some balls. Feel the power and compression you get on the ball. It’s amazing! This little tip will help you hit very crisp irons that go farther, as well as your driver being longer by many yards.

Tension-Free Hands And Arms Equal Higher Clubhead Speed

There is one BIG killer of clubhead speed. Tension! Tension kills speed, and lack of speed destroys distance. It’s so hard for golfers to accept it, but gripping the club lighter will give you more distance.

I want you to picture swinging a baseball bat. When you swing it, do you feel like you are gripping the bat tightly, or that your arms and hands are tight? I’ll bet not. There is no way you can swing the baseball bat powerfully with tight muscles.

Now, the next time you hit balls, I want you to do something for me. I know this sounds crazy, but I want you to grip the club really tight, flex your muscles hard and make a swing. I can tell you what happens. Your distance and ball contact will be way below normal. In fact, you may lose up to 50 yards or more on your drives.

I want you to quickly realize when tension starts in your hands with your grip, it will go up into your arms, then into your shoulders. You’ve just killed all possibility to hit it long! You have no chance with a “death grip” on the club.

This is the extreme in the sense of tension, but I really want you to get it. To understand that you need freedom in your swing, so that the club acts like a whip through the ball. You will also get great extension in your swing with relaxed hands and arms.

Here’s a great swing tip!

Just before you take your club away, give it a good waggle or two, and really feel the tension disappear from your hands. This will kickstart your swing with no tension, giving you the best chance at hitting your longest drives.

JB Holmes Video Tip For More Power

Watch this YouTube video of JB Holmes, as he tells you his SECRET to more power in his golf drives. It’s amazing to me that he mentions in the video his hands AHEAD at impact with his driver! I’ve never heard of that before, but he is so strong that the whip he creates with the unhingeing of his wrists just past impact creates a massive amount of clubhead speed and distance.

Now I would say this is a bit unconventional, but it works for JB. The majority of the time, you will here that you need to hit the ball with your driver with an ascending (upward) blow to maximize launch angle and distance, but I guess JB does it his OWN WAY!

What you can take away from this is the importance of holding your wrist cock (lag) as long as you can into the downswing. Try to think of holding it atleast to impact, but you will most likely not do that. But that’s the thought you want.

You will also notice, JB and his golf instructor mention the swing sequence coming down, and it’s definitely the big muscles leading the way, with the smaller ones at the end. This part is very conventional, and also states the importance of starting your downswing from the ground up, and not with your hands first.
